Welcome back to the Whose Land? Newsletter. I am Kayla, the Field Coordinator, and I am so excited to be communicating our recent updates to you all! Since we last wrote, Whose Land? has been busy planning for its spring events and making our 2023 programs sustainable for 2024.

Oneida Nation, Boarding School History Project. Working with the Oneida Nation High School and Oneida Cultural Heritage, we have adapted our 2022-2023 curriculum into a multi-year program that focuses explicitly on boarding school histories—from the experiences of Oneida elders at boarding schools to the history of the federal boarding school that once stood on the current grounds of the Oneida Nation High School. Milwaukee, Restoring Community and Memory: Benefiting from a 2023 planning grant from Wisconsin Humanities, Whose Land?’s newest program— the Northside Community History Collection Project—seeks to build a model to support a community-led archive that preserves, shares, and sustains Northside Milwaukee’s vibrant Black history. Neighborhood leaders, local historians, and area archivists are developing a process of collaboration that brings together a broad array of collections while protecting the autonomy and sustainability of individual projects and organizations. This spring, the model will be presented for feedback to wider Northside Milwaukee audiences of stakeholders. Stay tuned for more information and updates in the coming months!

2024 has also brought us a new student intern: Jennifer Gregorich! Our student team members—Jennifer, Javi, Sam, and Marshall—help this project keep moving forward. You will soon be able to learn more about them and what they do for the project on our website.

While in the region, Dr. Levy will also visit Onondaga (Syracuse area) and Oneida (Utica area) territories to conduct interviews, do research at local historical societies and archives, and meet with tribal leaders, local property owners, and organizations to strengthen partnerships and prepare for the New York/Oneida episode of the Whose Land? podcast.

Wisconsin, Spring 2024: We will be hosting—

• An Oral History Training Day for our Oneida partners

• A community engagement and archiving trip to Oneida Nation sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Madison

• Two Metcalfe Park Art Days with Metcalfe Park Community Bridges for the Northside Community History Collection Project, and

• A field trip in April for Madison high school students to Ripon, Wisconsin. The trip to Ripon is part of our new place-based curriculum project involving a three-way partnership that includes Whose Land?, Madison Country Day School, and Ripon College.
